Popular for missing one of the most critical kicks in the Chicago Bear’s playoff history, Cody Parkey is the pioneer of the “Double Doink.” Despite the rule of the game being you lose some you win some, the American football player has received his fair share of criticism in the sport. Though he was playing as a kicker for the Chicago Bears of the NFL when he missed the infamous kick, he had played for other top teams, including Eagles and Dolphins, before the stint.

Understandably, the first place Cody’s mind turned to for solace after his massive miss was home. He is confident of his wife Colleen and their dog Marlin’s support, even if everyone else was disappointed. And since the miss, Cody hasn’t been able to secure a contract with another NFL team. Let’s take a look at his playing career and the teams he has played for so far.

How It All Began with the Auburn Tigers

The placekicker Cody Parkey was born in Jupiter City, Florida, on February 19, 1992, into the family of Kelly and Doug Parkey Sr. Cody grew up along with his two siblings – Hunter and Doug Jr. He first started playing football while attending Jupiter High School. At the time, he was teammates with his brother Doug. The duo made an incredible impact on the team until their graduation.

Soon after he left Jupiter High, Cody enrolled in Auburn University, where he continued with his football career. He joined the Auburn Tigers in 2010 and played for four seasons, ending in 2013. During his college career, he helped the Auburn’s team to win the BCS National Champions twice. Playing the role of placekicker, he hauled in 27 points while converting 11 out of 14 goal attempts as a junior. In his senior year, Cody wrapped up his college career, scoring 66 points while turning 15 out of 21 field goals.

A Look Through Cody Parkey’s Professional Career

After his college career, Cody Parkey was not invited for the NFL combined exercise and eventually went undrafted during the NFL draft of 2014. After the draft, the player, who became determined to make it to the professional league, signed a contract with the Indianapolis Colts. However, after signing his contract, Cody was subsequently traded to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Philadelphia Eagles

Following his fantastic first impression on the Indianapolis Colts team, Cody was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles for a running back, David Fluellen. Joining the Eagles, the placekicker competed for and later won the starting shirt against Alex Henery. In his rookie year, in 2014, Cody set a new record in the league after scoring 150 points for the Eagles.

He also earned a spot in the Pro Bowl while being named to the All-Rookie Team. The following year, 2015, Cody sustained a groin injury, which caused him to miss several league games. After several failed attempts to return to the active roster, Parkey was on September 3, before the 2016 season, laid off by the Eagles.

Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins

A little over three weeks after he was released by the Eagles, Cody Parkey signed a contract with the Cleveland Browns and was placed on a $494,117 salary. Unfortunately, the placekicker wasn’t able to make the main roster and was also dropped on September 1, 2017. Wasting no time at all, the player got claimed off waivers by the Miami Dolphins on September 3.

Becoming a Dolphin, Cody improved significantly in his game that season. He was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week after scoring 13 points against Los Angeles Chargers in Week two of the 2017 season. He further recorded an 83.9 completion rate while scoring 99 out of 118 field goals at the end of the season, earning every cent on his $690,000 salary.

Chicago Bears

After a stellar season, Cody Parkey signed a four-year deal with the Chicago Bears in March 2018. The contract was valued at $15 million, with $9 million guaranteed. During the 2018 season, Cody was able to convert only 23 out of 30 field-goal attempts for the Bears.

Following a blocked field goal attempt by Parkey that could have won the Bears the 2018 NFC Wildcard game against the Eagles, the kicker made a move that fetched him backlash. The missed kick, which later became known as a “Double Doink,” made him feel so terrible that he made the mistake of discussing it on The Today Show without getting the appropriate clearance.

Reports of his impending release from the team came in February 2019 after missing 11 kicks in his first season. However, $3.5 million was still guaranteed on his contract for the year, and his release became official on March 13, 2019.

Tennessee Titans

On October 8, 2019, Cody signed a new contract with the Tennessee Titans. Not for long though, as he got waived in less than a month following Ryan Succop’s – the placekicker he replaced – return from injury. During his time with the Titans, Parkey earned a salary of $142,059, bringing his total earnings to $11,118,449 after six seasons. Since then, he hasn’t been able to secure a new contract with another NFL team to date.

What We Know About Cody Parkey’s Wife Colleen Rick

Cody Parkey may occasionally miss some kicks on the field, but his family life is another ball game. He is happily married to his long-term sweetheart and love of his life Colleen Rick Parkey. Born in the same city as her hubby, Colleen has spent most of her life in Florida, although she and Cody didn’t meet until their sophomore year in high school.

While the kicker was away at Alabama establishing a name for himself in Auburn college football, Colleen was studying at Florida State University. This is the part where things typically go awry for young lovers, but theirs is an admirable relationship on which, not even distance, had any adverse effect.

The couple announced their engagement in 2016 and tied the knot in July of the following year 2017. Their wedding took place at Cross Church in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Since then, they have been enjoying a blissful married life to date.

Cody Parker’s Instagram page chronicles the details of the things that matter to him most – Career, Colleen, and their dogs – in no particular order. The couple particularly has a knack for romantic trips around the world with pictures in destinations like Aruba, Maui, Bermuda, and Italy sprinkled all over Cody’s Instagram.

Although her Instagram page Bio reads Real Estate, Colleen appears to have her hands full between pregnancy and supporting her husband’s career at the moment.

As the couple excitedly await the arrival of their first child, Collen has been carrying her social media followers along with adorable pictures flaunting baby bumps and ultrasound images. In the meantime, they are getting a lot of parenting practice with their dogs, Marlin, and Mako.
