I had no idea they that My Little Pony was still a thing, let alone a thing anyone cared about. In reality, I probably haven’t thought about the bright plastic Hasbro toys, or any of the subsequent cartoon renderings, since somewhere in the mid-1980s. However, a quick bit of Internet research confirms that they never really went anywhere, even when I stopped paying attention.
Now there is also apparently a phenomenon called Bronies, obviously an amalgam of the words pony and bro. These are older male fans of the program My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, usually between the ages of 13 and 35.
Stick with me, there is a point, I promise.
Apparently, if you pay close attention to the background of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic there is a fun little dude with a sweet hairdo prancing around who bears a striking resemblance to David Tennant’s incarnation of The Doctor. Fans took notice and dubbed him Dr. Whooves, which is admittedly pretty clever.
The love for Whooves is so widespread that Funko decided to go ahead and release a toy that combines the tastes of two rabid fanbases into a single entity. Throw in equal parts Time Lord and My Little Pony, and this is what you wind up with.
In either a nod to collector sensibilities, or a blatant attempt to move more units, half of the Dr. Whooves figures will wear a red tie, while the other half wear green. Also, one out of every 24 pieces will be a “sparkly clear chase figure variant,” whatever that means.
