It took him five years to establish himself as one of the most illustrious players in NPB history and draw the interest of MLB teams all over the world. The Japanese pitcher had a stellar career in his native country, hitting 48 home runs and accumulating 166 RBIs with his bat in addition to compiling a 2.69 ERA and 651 strikeouts over 92 games. He triumphed in the Japan Series, which is baseball’s equivalent of the World Series in Japan. He was the Pacific League MVP and a recipient of the Best Nine award. Ohtani also competed for the Japanese National Team’s U-18 division.
