Petra Kvitova will take on Jessica Pegula in the Semi Finals of the Qatar Open 2021. Petra Kvitova is currently the World no.10 on the WTA rankings and Jessica Pegula is the World no.44.
Kvitova hasn’t been in the best of forms since the Australian Open 2021. At the Qatar Open 2021, she had a first round bye. Not the best option when you are looking to rediscover your form. In the two matches she has played so far, she has looked a little rusty. In her first round match against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, her victory better than it actually was, she had won in straight sets 6-1 6-3.
The second match that she played was a Quarter Final encounter with Anett Kontaveit. In this match Kvitova was dragged to the third round, and is perhaps a better reflection of her form. In the end Kvitova survived to take her place in the semis. Her opponent in the semis is Jessica Pegula.
Pegula has had a fantastic run since the Australian Open 2021 where she was the beaten Quarter Finalist. At the Qatar Open the 44 ranked player in the World had to come through Qualifiers into the main draw. Once in the main draw, she defeated Wang Qiang 6-3 6-1 in the first round.
Then she took out Jeļena Ostapenko 6-2 7-5 in the second round. But her most impressive victory came in the Quarter Finals against the 2nd seed Karolína Plíšková, who she beat 6-3 6-1.
These two players have met only once before on the tour, it was in the third round of the US Open 2020. Kvitova won that match in straight sets 6-4 6-3, so the current head to head is 1-0 in favour of Kvitova.
Kvitova has a tendency to drop off during her games, as happened in the second round against Kontaveit. Her serving was off, and took her a lot of effort to win the points. Kvitova looks a little undercooked coming into the match against Pegula.
Pegula on the other hand is looking like a confident player. Her aggressive all out brand of tennis seems to be bringing out the best in her. In the Quarter Final match against Pliskova, Pegula just blew her away. Pegula looks set to reach the final of this event.
Match Prediction: Jessica Pegula to defeat Petra Kvitova in three sets.
